Vernon was invited to the 2009 HSPVA (High School for the Visual and Performing Arts) Annual Bash. He had been looking forward to going all week and it was located in Downtown Houston known for its' homeless population, of which Vernon was once part of. So being the careful people we are, we took a bit extra time to get there.
We were one of the first people to get there at a small venue called Burkenvelde.
One room had shirts and other paraphernalia for sale to support the school and a silent auctions of various art. Vernon did meet a couple of people he knew from his years at the school.
We ate great Ninfa's food but in a room where we were all sweating and sticking to our chairs.
The entertainment was different. We heard one woman talk about being gay in the 70's and making out at the school. Then she sang a song with another woman and they kissed at the end. Vernon chuckled and the kids and I raised out eyebrows, rolled our eyes and said "Enough already". And that was the end of the entertainment session.
Sadly, it was too small for the crowd that showed up and the space was under served greatly by the A/C. So much so that it was actually cooler outside than inside. That is saying a lot being that it was 98 degrees outside in Houston yesterday. We cut our losses and left at 8:30pm, it was to last until 10 PM.
Oddly enough, it was entertaining to watch all the people who came and how they dressed and interacted with each other. The artsy crowd if definitely outside of my world in so very many ways. The clothing, mannerisms, and physical demonstrativeness captivated my attention. Amy and Colt had fun pointing out oddities to me. Vernon just shook his head at the three of us squares.
I felt so bad for Vernon as he had really been looking forward to meeting up and reminiscing with some of his old friends. He has decided that it might be better to only attend the class of 1974 reunions.
